Celebrating our first year of Privacy Certification Training

The year is almost coming to an end and there is no better time than now to do some reflection on our gains and accomplishments. We are happy to count our milestones for the year 2022 and among these is a celebration of our first year as an officially accredited privacy certification training partner of the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP)

We couldn’t be even more proud and appreciative of our former and current students of the Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/C) and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM) programs. As a professional in the privacy field and a privacy trainer, I always look forward to these training sessions as each brings an opportunity to learn from my students and also exchange important insights around data privacy and protection.

It is no surprise that technology and data continue to shape the information economy and the risks associated with it are affecting organizations of all sizes, and in all sectors. With these challenges organizations are forced to develop critical skills to avoid data breaches, identity theft, loss of customer trust and hefty penalties from privacy regulations. Employees on the other hand are seeing career opportunities as demand for privacy professionals is on the rise. You may be an organization or individual looking to develop and advance skills with a data privacy training course but you’re not sure which training course fulfills your needs. Our Frequently Asked Questions on privacy certification training present an overview of CIPP/C and CIPM.

CIPP/C Logo

The IAPP describes the broad CIPP program as a course for “the go-to person for privacy laws, regulations and frameworks” in organizations. There are various country-specific versions of CIPP to suit local regulations and legislations such as CIPP Asia (CIPP/A), U.S. Private Sector (CIPP/US), Europe (CIPP/E), U.S. Government (CIPP/G) and Canada (CIPP/C), which The Privacy Pro offers.

CIPP/C is a foundational privacy certification specifically designed for Canadian privacy professionals. It focuses on legal foundations of Canadian privacy, public and private sector practices, international privacy laws such as the GDPR, and security practices that relate to privacy. It also contains several case studies to help illustrate concepts covered in the course. Prior experience with privacy is not required – just a desire to join an exciting and fast moving field. Our attendees range from those involved in IT/security, management, legal counsel, data governance and human resources.

CIPM Logo

CIPM is an upper level credential in the IAPP collection which seeks to provide professionals with the tools and knowledge to develop and implement a privacy management program. It focuses on practical application of privacy laws and regulations, and how they guide formulation of sustainable privacy policies, practices and procedures within organizations. CIPM covers essential components of the privacy management program, governance, and operational life cycle. It focuses on topics such as developing and implementing a privacy program, creating a personal information inventory, developing a privacy policy, data subject rights, employee privacy training and preparing for a data breach. In many cases, those trained in CIPM play a lead role in defining and maintaining data privacy policies or applications necessary for compliance with applicable organizational rules, privacy regulations and legislation.

Often my students ask if it is acceptable to take CIPM without taking CIPP/C. Unless an individual has prior privacy experience, I recommend taking CIPP/C before taking CIPM. I often say that CIPP/C provides a good introduction and overview of privacy but at the 10,000 foot level. The CIPM course brings privacy to a more practical 5,000 foot level.

I hope this blog has given you some useful information about which course best suits your needs. If you are considering taking either of our courses, visit our website to view our upcoming courses or drop us an email at training@theprivacypro.com. We still have seats available for the CIPP/C starting on November 8, 2022.
